World Languages
The World Languages department strives to present a balanced approach to learning another language, developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Communication skills are stressed in French and Spanish, in addition to studying the French-speaking and Spanish-speaking cultures of the world.
Students have the choice to take either a 2-year French or 2-year Spanish program. Both programs include full year courses. In 7th grade, students take either French or Spanish 1A. In 8th grade, they continue their studies with either French or Spanish 1B.
FRENCH:
French 1 A
This course introduces students to the basics of French communication and culture. Present tense conjugations are studied in depth, as well as subject pronouns, articles, adjective agreement, and possession. Culture is integrated into each unit as an important component of language study. In addition to a highly interactive on-line textbook, students use investigative methods to develop understanding of concepts and broadening vocabulary. The classroom experience is a combination of direct instruction, independent investigation, group work, games, songs, and videos.
French 1B
This course continues where French 1A left off. Students will learn more irregular verbs, more complex verb tenses and vocabulary. Culture will be integrated into the curriculum to correlate to the grammatical studies. Students will be expected to communicate in French more than in the French 1A. Reading/comprehension skills will be expanded. Methods of instruction will continue as in French 1A.
